Subject: Camera Calibration Not Possible / NRC Error Messages During ADAS Calibration
Products affected: Vehicles with continuous dynamic ADAS calibration (multi‑camera systems)
Tester: megaMacs (same behavior as OE testers)
Summary
In certain situations, users may experience NRC error messages or failed attempts to initiate camera calibration using megaMacs. This behavior is not a tester limitation. The megaMacs user experiences the same control‑unit response and error condition as with the OE tester.
The root cause lies in the vehicle’s internal calibration logic and system state, not in the diagnostic tool.
Symptom
- Calibration cannot be started
- NRC error codes (e.g. NRCXX) displayed
- User complaint that “megaMacs cannot start calibration”
- Identical error behavior observed with OE diagnostic testers
Diagnostic logs typically show that the vehicle is in:
“Calibration mode active”
Technical Background
Modern vehicles with ADAS do not perform calibration as a single, isolated windshield procedure.
Instead, these vehicles run continuous dynamic calibration processes while driving.
Key points:
- A calibration always starts by clearing existing reference data and learning new reference values
- Dynamic calibration is constantly active in the background
- Multiple sensors and ECUs are involved, not only the front camera
Affected systems typically include:
- Front camera
- Rear camera
- Side cameras
- Side assist radar
These sensors collaborate to support functions such as:
- Lane Keeping Assist
- Lane Departure Warning
- Lane Change Assist
Dynamic calibration is performed automatically by the vehicle in intervals of approximately 10–30 km, depending on vehicle speed and driving conditions.
Typical Workshop Scenario
- Vehicle arrives at workshop
- Windshield is replaced
- Technician attempts to manually initiate camera calibration
- Calibration request is rejected with NRC error
At this point:
- The vehicle is already performing its own internal dynamic calibration
- No windshield misalignment fault has yet been detected by the system
- The control unit therefore blocks external calibration initiation
Practical Resolution / Recommended Procedure
In remote support cases, the following procedure has proven effective:
- Test‑drive the vehicle for 5–10 minutes
- Switch off the vehicle
- Lock the vehicle and wait 5–10 minutes
- Retry calibration with the tester
In most cases, this allows the system to:
- Exit internal calibration mode
- Accept a new calibration command
Important Clarifications
- This behavior is not worse on megaMacs than on OE testers
- OE testers show similar errors, but interpretation requires system knowledge
- The issue is vehicle state–dependent, not tester‑dependent
NRC Error Codes – Important Note
NRC errors:
- Are notifications from the control unit
- Are not generated by the diagnostic tester
- Commonly misunderstood in hotline cases
Example:
- NRC33 typically indicates that the security/firewall mechanism is active
- This does not mean the tester is malfunctioning
- Resolution may require:
- Connecting the tester online
- Logging in via CSM, where applicable
